Getting Your Car Ready for an Edmonton Winter: A Mechanic's Checklist

Edmonton winters are hard on vehicles. Cold starts, road salt, potholes and months of short trips all add wear that doesn't show until something fails on the coldest morning of the year. A little prep in the fall saves a tow in January.
Here's the checklist our technicians run through when a car or truck comes in for winter prep at Big Toy Shop in south Edmonton.
1. Battery and charging system
Cold weather makes a weak battery obvious. We load-test the battery, check the terminals for corrosion and make sure the alternator is charging properly. If your battery is getting on in years or has been slow to crank, fall is the time to replace it, not after it leaves you stranded.
2. Block heater and cord
Plug in your block heater before the first cold snap and make sure it works. Check the cord for cracks, cuts or melted ends. A damaged cord is a safety problem as well as a no-start problem.
3. Tires
Winter tires grip far better than all-seasons once temperatures drop. Book your changeover before the first snowfall rush.
Check tread depth and look for uneven wear, which can point to alignment or suspension problems.
Tire pressure drops as it gets colder. Check it monthly through the winter.
4. Brakes
Stopping on ice needs everything working properly. We check pad thickness, rotors, brake lines and fluid condition. Salt and slush speed up corrosion on brake components, so small problems in the fall can become big ones by spring.
5. Fluids
Coolant: tested for its freeze protection, not just topped up.
Washer fluid: switch to a winter-rated fluid so it doesn't freeze in the lines.
Oil: if you're close to your next change, do it before winter so the engine starts the season with fresh oil.
6. Wipers, lights and heater
Replace streaky wiper blades, make sure every light works, and check that the heater and defrost clear the windshield quickly. Visibility matters more in the dark, snowy months than any other time of year.
7. Suspension and steering
Edmonton's potholes are tough on ball joints, tie rods and shocks. If your vehicle pulls, clunks over bumps or the steering feels loose, have it checked before winter roads make it worse.
